Created in 1959, this was the first national park in Chiapas. The park, a temperate forest featuring more than 50 lakes and two Mayan archeological sites, is located 37 miles southeast of Comitán and preserves 17,290 acres.

There are two roads into the park. One is paved and leads to lakes La Encantada, Bosque Azul, Ensueno and Agua Tinta.

A dirt road leads to lakes Canada, Pojoj, Tziscao and Dos Laguanas. Lake Tziscao, close to the border of Guatemala, is one of the largest lakes.

You can take rugged hikes deep into the Lancandón forest.

A guide is suggested for exploring deep within in the park. They can be found in the small town of Tziscao.

Camping is permitted near Lake Bosque Azul. San Cristóbal, three hours southeast, offers a variety of lodging and services.
